"Flatford Mill (Scene on a Navigable River)"
John Constable - 102 x 127 cm
John Constable often depicted scenes from his childhood, his ‘careless boyhood’ which he associates with the Stour river, “it made me a painter and I am grateful’ wrote the artist in a letter. The painting Flatford Mill shows the scene of the same river, a young boy on a horse that was used to pull the boats up and down the river. In the image, the young boys are disconnecting from the horse so that the boat may pass under the bridge. The painting’s charm lies with the active energy seen amongst the young boys. Beyond them is a detailed view of the East Bergholt village, trees surround the field opposite of the river. Houses are seen on the edge of the horizon. Much of the painting was executed outdoors, the painting is a large six foot canvas. It is owned and exhibited at the Tate Britain gallery in London.
