"Study for the Head of Leda"
Leonardo Da Vinci - Chalk - 17 x 14 cm
Leonardo Da Vomco was an Italian artist who epitomized the Renaissance. Study for the Head of Leda, was a study made for the lost painting of Leda and the Swan. Melzi's number 12. Leda was the queen of Sparta in classical mythology, where she was seduced by Jupiter in the farm of a swan. Leonardo Da Vinci worked on two versions of this composition but only one was made and subsequently destroyed around 1700. Here, Leda turns her head to the left and gazes down, but the artist spent less effort on her face but more on her complicated hairstyle. Parallel plaits run over the top of her head, with a pattern of interlacing at the temples, with dense whorls and woven plaits, even studying the head from the back.
